Hayley Kiyoko & Gavin Turek: Femme Freedom at Newport Music Hall

Pride month is finally here, as are some colorful artists! First up, young electro-pop vocalist, Hayley Kiyoko. Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio is rolling out the rainbow carpet for the proud singer, accompanied by her opening act, soulful pop artist, Gavin Turek.

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the singer/songwriter, Hayley Kiyoko, has reaped the benefits of evolving fame and wider recognition in just a few short years. Soon after the former Disney child star released her music video for “Girls like Girls,” the song was a hit, and so was she. Seemingly overnight, Kiyoko transcended from a Disney Princess to a queer electro-pop queen sensation.

With no sacrifice to her passion and steadfast dedication to her music, she seems to have found her true voice once she fully embraced the beauty of her homosexuality through her poetic lyrics and thought-provoking music videos. Amidst catchy synth-heavy beats and effortless smooth vocals, Kiyoko aims to create sound art that brings change through the normalization of same-sex human connection in coexistence with ringing true self-acceptance.

Alongside Kiyoko performs Gavin Turek, a modern-day Donna Summer. This soul pop dance diva, also from LA, has spent most of her musical career exploring new ways to reintroduce the lost but not forgotten genre of disco. After posting her first song on MySpace in 2009, she met producer, Jennifer Lee—aka TOKiMONSTA—and began her journey of solidifying her place in the music industry.

By collaborating with more of today’s hottest producers and DJ’s, her sound makes for a freeing experience on the dance floor. However, her latest single, “Birdie Bees” shows us a more electro R&B infused side to Turek’s style. Like Kiyoko, Turek takes control of her own image and sound by having her work liberate her listeners in the form of confidence and self-love.

There is deep love and meaning in the work these women put out into the world. If you are attending Newport Music Hall in Columbus on June 9th, get ready for some fierce performances by women that could forever change the music industry with their empowering sense of self and acceptance.
