Artist Interview: Abby Holliday

Abby Holliday is an indie alternative pop/sing-songwriter based in Nashville, TN. Her music takes you through snapshots of her life by putting those hard-to-explain emotions that we all experience into beautifully crafted songs. Having started her career in Cincinnati, OH, we at Inhailer Radio are delighted to have her back on August 14th to play for us once again. Before the show, we sat down with her to discuss touring, her current inspirations, and the 5-year anniversary of 'When We Are Far Apart I will Fall Apart.'
What artist have you been listening to a lot lately?
I’ve been listening to this album called “Blue Heron” by an artist named Jodi. I added it to my music library a few years ago, and the other day my Apple Music library glitched and brought it back up to my recently added section, and I’m thankful for it because I had forgotten how much I loved the album!
What song of yours is your favorite to play live right now?
I’m on tour right now and we’ve been playing a new (unreleased) song called “How Long.” It’s one of my favorites that I’ve written recently and it’s always a fun time working out a new one with the band and testing it out in front of new crowds. It makes me excited for the next batch of songs. My band set up has changed a lot through the last few years and it’s been fun finding different ways to play the songs. It keeps it fresh for us so we don’t get bored!
The anniversary edition includes an old voice memo of “Dreams.” What was the process of taking that early demo and turning it into the finished recording? Was that process different from how you usually work on songs?
I usually write my songs by myself on acoustic guitar, which was the case for “Dreams.” I had a pretty clear vision for that song going into the studio, and it stayed pretty true to the form it had in the early stages, with some ethereal production elements added.
Looking back at that voice memo now, is there anything about the original version that you still really love?
When I listen back to that voice memo in particular, the main thing I think is how young I sound! I can hear my younger self coming through in the vocal especially. Listening to it brings me back to the room I recorded it in when I lived in Clifton post-college. Special memories.
When you come back and play a show in Cincy now, what is your unique or favorite part of coming back?
I love Cincy. I lived there for my whole life until moving to Nashville in 2021. I think it will always feel like home to me in some ways. Coming home and playing shows and seeing friends is always so sweet, and at the same time, it’s never long enough to see everyone I want to see. Skyline after every Cincy show is a must. I have to get Graeter’s. I have to go to Mom ‘n ‘em. I have to walk on the bike trail. Playing Fountain Square in 2022 was a really special show for many reasons, and I’m stoked to be back again!
