Y'all. I don't even have the words to properly express our gratitude from all of the Inhailer team to all of you dedicated, engaging, intelligent, and hilarious fans who have showed up for this special event and shown us so much love. All I can say is THANK YOU for allowing Inhailer Radio a place in your hearts next to 97X WOXY. We are truly honored to be the host of this program that meant so much to you all, and we are definitely already discussing how to keep this tradition going for years to come! This is not the end of the Modern Rock 500; it's the beginning of a new era. We hope you stay along with us for the ride :)
It was great to hear all the old DJ's and favorite songs from my youth again, although I admit it was a mix of joy and sadness of things gone by. I hope Inhailer considers doing an Inhailer Modern Rock 500 next year with their DJ's running the show, but only if they want to. Inhailer is a damn good station in its own right, and I hope that all of us old 97x'ers can get behind it and help keep it going by donating some of our time, money, and T-shirt space to it.
As the countdown winds down again, after listening 8 days in a row, the Modern Rock 500 revival has shaken from the cobwebs. Again, so many thanks to everyone who put this together, and to Inhailer Radio for hosting.
My 15 seconds of 97X fame: I was the winner of the first Modern Rock 500 contest (was it 1988? 1989?). At the end of the countdown, the DJ announced the winner but couldn’t pronounce my last name; he said “the winner is … [my first name] … some Polish girl from Lebanon.” There aren’t many people in Lebanon with Polish last names, and I’d sent in my post card, so I guessed it was me. The two of us had a good laugh when I called the station to claim my prize, which was the albums containing the top 10 songs on the countdown, and I still have them all and still listen to them. A friend just happened to be taping the countdown and made a copy for me – I still have that, too.
Every car I’ve owned since my 83 Mercury has sported a 97X bumper sticker. When I totaled my Honda in the mid-90s, I sent a self-addressed stamped envelope to the station, requesting a sticker for my new car. Not only did they send me a half dozen bumper stickers, but they sent my envelope back, too. I ran out of bumper stickers with my current car.
And I was thrilled to have my recipe included in the Modern Rock Cookbook!
97X carried me from my 20s through my 40s and provided the soundtrack to those years. It was an awesome ride. Thanks.
Starting to wrap it up again 😓 Again - it's been such a breath of fresh air. I don't think I knew how much I needed this. Thanks again for all the hard work and everyone involved. 🏁🏁🏁
Fingers seriously crossed that Inhailer gets a bump in their listenership going forward so that they want to do something like this again. 😉
I'm doing the modern day equivalent of taping the MR500.I have the station playing on my music server, and I have a cache of the whole days MR500 replay. ~16+ hours mp4 files, which i then edit down to the actual MR500 and convert to mp3.So I have Laps 500-325Laps 324-150today will be 149-0good for the car, or to have play on the bluetooth speakers...I also downloaded the MR500 playlists on Youtube (3 different ones) which equals over 1000 unique songs (interesting to see how the MR500 evolved over 20+ years).Dave and Damien were gracious enough to lend me access to their station breaks/commercials/bits etc, which I then incorporated into the 1000 song directory...Playing it on random over the past few years was my way of gaining 97x back until now.. :) Thanks everyone, this have been great..
I have been playing those 97X playlists of the various MR500s on Spotify for quite some time. If some of those are your playlists, thanks a million for the effort involved in putting those together!
I had a friend in college that would always include this song on any mixtape she made for someone. 😆 Saying hi to Cheryl in my brain. Hi Cheryl!
Fun thing on Wikipedia: Smith said of the video: "'The Love Cats' is far from being my favourite song: composed drunk, video filmed drunk, promotion made drunk. It was a joke."
Dodge Veg-O-Matic - hahaha! This is one of those songs that screams 97X to me, along with songs like TV Party, Take The Skinheads Bowling, To Hell With Good Intentions, Institutionalized, American Heavy Metal Weekend, The Things You Left Behind. You never heard these songs anywhere else. And about half of them I haven't heard since the mid-80s. What a gift this Modern Rock 500 revival has been!
In addition to the Modern Rock 500, 97X used to play the top 97 songs of the year----every year around New Year's Eve. I would like to get a list of all the top 97's from each year they did it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks
I forgot all about the 97 Best Of. I probably taped more than a few of those shows - I know I have 1984 because it was transferred to a CD and is in my car!
Agreed! Inhailer DJ Pete Riddle actually does a similar concept on his Thursday show, but it's a 3-pack—inspired by WHFS DJ Weasel. You can catch it every week in the second hour of his show, 12–1PM ET!Some recent 3-pack themes he's done:
Lightning — in honor of The Flying Pig race held in Cincinnati, this was a set with one song title, album title, and artist that all included the word "lightning"
Songs from bands named after body parts
Songs that include a cello
Songs with (only) times as the song title
Bands with Cincinnati Public School teachers as members

Last Goodbye hits different this time around 🥲

Placing Violent Femmes’ Kiss Off directly after Silent All These Years was truly a perfect move
me running to turn up the volume when Coffee & TV comes on

"Let's all meet up in the year 2000"...and 23!
Loving the replay! Life keeps popping up but I got to fill in a few gaps from earlier in the week. Great the first time and still great!
Bad by U2 -- I swear Steve Baker played that song every morning for several months after The Unforgettable Fire came out.
WTH. Never heard Secret Meeting from The National before. How'd that get on there?

Suzanne Vega is such a great storyteller in song form.
And a side note, my grandmother went to school/was friends with Minnie Pearl down in Nashville.
I really want to hear the 6 packs that we hear the ads for. The antilove one sounds fantastic!
I feel like we really ought to be giving some thanks to Hub and Weber...
New t-shirts goal: Get to 250 orders!
We'll be selling them up until the end of the MR500 replay on Monday night, so if you still need one (or ten), get it now.
They'll ship out about a week after Monday!
